DM systems may come and go in your life. Remember those youthful days with Hummingbird and Autonomy? (And Netscape, and WordPerfect, and…) Yeah, we’ve still got grainy photos and a couple of well-loved t-shirts, too.
But as your organization grows, you may find that you and your document management vendor are growing apart. Document management systems constantly evolve based on technology advancements and customer feedback. While you may be a valued customer for a technology vendor, you’re not their only customer. Sometimes that means that changes to a particular system designed to be valuable to the maximum number of customers might not be changes that are optimal for your particular organization. Or maybe your organization itself has changed dramatically over time, and now has a radically different set of needs from when you initially picked your current DM system. Just as human relationships often end and leave you sorting out whether to continue relationships with mutual friends, the same thing can happen when a DM vendor relationship is coming to an end and you need to sort out what that means for your relationship with your DM service provider.
